NHRC issues notices to DGP, UP & SSP, Gautam Budh Nagar on slow progress in the abduction and beating of an RTI activist

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that an RTI activist, Anoop Singh was abducted by some persons from Dankaur town in Gautam Budh Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh as his activism using provisions of the RTI Act did not go down well with them.  Allegedly, he was burnt with cigarette butts on his private parts and beaten with hot iron rods before being dumped in a neighbouring district four days after his abduction on the 13th December, 2013. Though, an FIR has been registered, the local police was reportedly treating the case as a routine affair.

Reportedly, Anoop Singh had filed several RTI applications, mostly on infrastructure projects, which earned him the reputation of a whistle blower in the area.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, carried on the 19th December, 2013, if true, raise serious issue of human rights violation and issued notices to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh and Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar calling reports in the matter within 2 weeks.
