NHRC notice to Maharashtra Government on reports of a tribal teenagers death due to police torture in Bhiwandi

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that Babu Thakre, a tribal boy of 16 years age, was tortured in police custody and succumbed to his injuries in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra.  However, reportedly, his detention came as a case of mistaken identity.  The police had received a tip-off that a man named Babu has stolen two kilogram of gold.  But instead of going after the known criminal Babu, who lived in the same neighbourhood, they went after the teenager.  He was picked up by two constables and was tortured during interrogation.  Subsequently, he was asked to come to police station for further questioning.  On June 21st he even made a failed attempt to suicide by hanging and later died at a hospital.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the newspaper report, if true, raise a serious issue of human rights of the teenager and next of his kin.  A notice has been issued to the Principal Secretary (Home), Government of Maharashtra calling upon him to submit a detailed report within four weeks.
