NHRC notice to Government of Kerala and Sports Authority of India over reports of suicide by a female trainee at Sports Authority of India hostel in Alappuzha
New Delhi, 20th May, 2015. The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of a complaint as well as various telephone calls requesting intervention of the Commission into the incident in Alappuzha, Kerala in which one of the female trainees of Sports Authority of India hostel committed suicide on the 7th May, 2015.

         The Commission has observed that the unfortunate incident has given rise to serious allegations about violation of human rights.  It has asked the Chief Secretary, Government of Kerala, Inspector General of Police, Ernakulam Range, Superintendent of Police, Alappuzha, Secretary, Sports Authority of India, New Delhi to send reports on the incident within two weeks.  It has also asked the present stage of the investigation conducted by the police and the enquiries which were conducted by the Secretary, Sports, Government of Kerala and the Director General, Sports Authority of India along with the reports.

          The Acting Chairperson, NHRC will lead a team, for an on-the-sport inquiry, which will visit Alappuzha from the 21st to 22nd May, 2015.  The Commission has asked the Superintendent of Police, Alappuzha, Kerala to make following arrangements for the team of the Commission:

(i)          Meeting the three girl athletes who survived;

(ii)         Meeting the parents/guardians of the deceased girl;

(iii)       Meeting the District Collector, Alappuzha, the Superintendent of Police, Alappuzha and the Investigation Officer of the case;

(iv)        Meeting any public spirited person who is interested in sharing any valuable information or in making any useful suggestions;

(v)         Meeting the trainers and the senior students if they are interested in meeting the NHRC team.

The Commission has also asked the Superintendent of Police, Alappuzha to arrange the meeting at a convenient place in Alappuzha on Friday, the 22nd May, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. onwards.
