"You Have A Friend In Delhi Whom You Can Turn To for Help" : Rahul Gandhi Tells Mizos
Congress Vice-President Shri Rahul Gandhi struck an emotional chord with the youth of Mizoram, during his speech in Kolasib. "I want you to know that you have a friend in Delhi whom you can turn to for help," Shri Gandhi told the predominantly young audience.

Recalling his first trip to the state, Shri Gandhi said, "The first time I came to Mizoram was in 1987 with my father. The accord had been signed and peace had returned to Mizroam. I still remember the trip. We went to different parts of Mizoram and met the young people".

"This time, I have come here to deliver a speech, but later I want to do what my father did. I want to come back and travel around Mizroam and meet the young people of Mizoram.

Shri Gandhi showcased the achievements of the Congress government in Mizoram as well as what the UPA government had done in the state.

"Our focus has been on the New Land Use Policy and on improving horticulture and agriculture. Large parts of Mizoram used to follow traditional jhoom agricultural cultivation. We have helped them take up new methods of agriculture. We have opened up many new avenues for our farmers so that they can prosper," he said.

Stressing on the New Land Use Policy, Shri Gandhi said "The Opposition has asked whether the new policy is actually a special project. I would like to assure them that it is a special project and that government of India has spent Rs 2800 crores in past 5 years for the development of Mizoram.

In fact assistance has gone up from Rs 50 crore a year to Rs 700 crore a year. I am happy to say, we have reached 1.3 lakh families in the state. I would also like to assure those people who haven't received benefit of the policy, we will ensure that benefits reach maximum people". His commitment on the New Land Use Policy was received with a loud applause from the audience.

"There will be a tremendous impact of this policy on Mizoram's economy. Youngsters will get jobs and farmers will be able to produce more," he added.

Shri Gandhi announced that the UPA government will open a new trade route to connect Mizoram to Kolkata.

"In order to make your lives easier, we are connecting Mizoram directly to Kolkata. We are opening a new trade route which will transform your lives. Today your produce has to take a long route to reach Kolkata. This project will enable you to directly reach Kolkata," he said.

"The project will be completed very soon," he added.

"I am aware that it is very important for the people of Mizoram to be connected to the rest of country. Our government will connect Mizoram by roads. We will connect every village as we have promised in our manifesto," he said.

"Wherever I travel around India, I see youngsters from the state..You make us very proud when you show us how capable you are," he said.

Addressing the youth, Shri Gandhi said "It is important for the youth of Mizoram to work in rest of the country and send money back to their family but it is also important that we create jobs for Mizos in this state. Our priorities are skill development and education".

Stressing on the work done in the education sector, the Congress Vice-President said "We have already done a lot of work on education. We have given central university status to Mizoram University and started NIT in Mizoram and also the mass communication institution. Some time back, some youngsters from Mizoram came to see me and said that we should have a medical college in Mizoram, so that they can secure medical education in this state itself. We will work to establish a medical college at state referral hospital".
