NHRC notice to Government of Jharkhand over serving of liquor in a Tribal residential School, Kudroom

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that in a Tribal residential school, Kudroom, Garhwa, Jharkhand, children were made to consume liquor and watch blue films.  Reportedly, when the District Welfare Officer took action against the Peon, who had been instrumental into doing all this, the students created ruckus.  Reacting to this, the Principle of the School said that it is wrong to implicate the Peon in the matter.  The children were born there with liquor in their mouth.  Except a few persons, everybody consumed liquor in the School, including the students and teachers.  According to the newspaper report, carried on the 12th September, 2014, the matter came to light when a team led by an NGO visited the School on complaints of irregularities in the supply of mid-day meal.

          The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to the Chief Secretary, Government of Jharkhand calling for a report within four weeks.
